Addiction is addiction, period. At the root of all addiction is pain. I know you’ve heard the phrase, “Let me eat my feelings.” When we turn to something, whether it be alcohol, drugs, gambling, porn or food, we are in search of a way to feel better. We are searching for a way to stop hurting from some type of pain. Most often that pain is emotional. Past traumas that we’ve never addressed and/or allowed ourselves to heal from. Since no one showed us how to heal from trauma, we turn to ways that allow us a temporary escape from the pain of those traumas. This is how addiction is born.

Food addiction might be the most underestimated addiction of them all. Unlike drugs and alcohol or gambling and porn, food is something every single human being must partake in, every single day. It is a vital necessity. Where the problem comes in is when we progress into eating for pure entertainment, happiness, or too feel better. Now there is a problem. But why? You had such a horrible day today, so what’s wrong with coming home and burying yourself in a carton of ice cream? You’re not hurting anyone, right? Wrong.

You’re hurting yourself. If you’re like me and ate for pleasure, out of boredom or simply because enough was never enough, then you know that when you reached the bottom of that carton of ice cream, you felt worse than you did before you took that first bite. Now you are left with shame for pigging out, guilt over how much you just ate and the original hurt/pain that you were trying to make go away. And that’s only the beginning of the problem. In an effort to stop the madness and lose weight, you go on a diet. Here we go. You are about to create a vicious cycle that only Jesus Christ can break…

Recovery. Relapse. Repeat.

  • Recovery

    Recovery.

Recovery begins when you go on a “diet.” You want to stop the unhealthy and shameful way you’ve been eating and get serious about weight loss and getting healthy. You‍ ‍dive in with all you got. Dedication, willpower and motivation. But somewhere along the way, you compromise. You decide a “cheat day” is ok. Soon, you find out that getting back on track is proving to be way more difficult than anticipated. Overwhelmed by cravings that have started up from foods you ate on your cheat day, you buckle. You exit recovery and are now a victim of relapse.

  • Relapse

    Relapse.

You relapsed. You gave into temptation and now you are right back where you started feeling even worse than before. Guilt, shame, feelings of failure are so overwhelming that desperation to not have to feel them anymore takes over you and you go hard on all your favorite comfort foods. You glance down at the tiny water droplets hitting your plate and realize they’re tears. Could you possibly feel anymore miserable? You continue to eat, trying to bury the pain to no avail. Finally at your rock bottom, your desire to try again is rekindled and you enter back into recovery.

  • Repeat

    Repeat.

You’re back up going stronger than ever, more determined to be consistent and not give into temptation! This time will be different. This time you will be able to control the urges. This time you refuse to let a slip up get out of hand and take you down. Before you know it, you’re staring down Thanksgiving. You try to talk yourself up and convince yourself you’re strong enough to make it through unscathed. Compromise knocks again and you justify partaking in dinner with everyone under the reason of “it’s a holiday and holidays don’t count.” The cycle starts all over again.

Jesus

The Solution.

The only sustainable way to break out of that vicious cycle of recovery, relapse, repeat is JESUS CHRIST. There’s no chemical solution to a spiritual problem. Satan is holding the chains that bind you and only through Jesus Christ can you be truly set free. Jesus is the answer to EVERYTHING! I simply cannot emphasize this enough.

So, now what?
